Built into the Rocky Mountains, this tiny 300 s.f. building takes full advantage of the 360 degree views to both the surrounding terrestrial beauty and the expansive Colorado sky. The exterior skin is clad in corten steel panels designed to patina + rust over time, protecting the panels from any deterioration and providing the Client with a zero maintenance finish that will blend into the natural environment over time. The control room of the observatory has been designed to Passivhaus standards, allowing the building to be heated and cooled passively by the sun and wind. A remote array of photovoltaic panels provides the necessary power for the building, including the Client’s telescope equipment.
